Inside Webster and Pomeroy's Bar Expatriate, Open Now
Story by Erin DeJesus, PDX Eater
Culinary couple Kyle Webster (the opening barman at St. Jack) and Top ChefMaster cheftestapant Naomi Pomeroy have made things official at their hotly anticipated Northeast bar, Expatriate — located right across the street from Pomeroy's Beast. And immediately, aesthetic details diverge greatly from Pomeroy's famously Frenchy, meaty restaurant. Midnight-navy walls were inspired by the color of men's tuxedos in '40s films; an arch salvaged from a former Chinese restaurant sits behind the black-walnut bar; white curly maple booths are arranged in moveable modules (perhaps to make room for those promised dance parties).
According to Webster, the bar's early reputation as a Burmese-bar-food joint has been exaggerated, though Asian influences do show up on Pomeroy's food menu. A "Salad Days" section features dishes like samoa chaat with tamarind brown butter; Burmese tea leaf, papaya, and tomato salad arrives with "crunchy fried things" on top; while a watermelon and tempura squash blossom salad features candied peanuts and a Szechuan vinaigrette. A "Biggie Smalls" menu subhead offers chinese sausage corn dogs, shrimp toast, and Pomeroy's take on James Beard's famous onion-and-butter sandwich.
An opening cocktail menu, meanwhile, offers three wines by the glass and sips including the classic Queen Elizabeth (vermouth, benedictine, lime) and Expatriate's house daiquiri. Both food and drink menus will consistently change based on what's pouring.
Expatriate is open now. Hours of operation: 5p.m. to midnight, daily.
